The cemetery dates back to the year 1843. On the right hand side of the entrance there is a funeral monument to the eternal memory of Jews who died in the extermination camps during World War II.
Entering the cemetery one notices the almost total absence of flowers. Jews put a small pebble on the grave, a sign of love and memory of the deceased; the firmness of the stone represents the intensity of the sentiment.
The cemetery is the resting place for some of the persons who contributed to the growth of Trieste during the 19th century: the founder of the Generali Insurance Company, the managers of the Adriatic Lloyd, the RAS Insurance Companies and the founder of the Stock Distilleries.
The main path is lined with the graves of Rabbis moved from the ancient cemetery of Via del Monte. Most of them are in the shape of a sarcophagus and date back to the period between 1750 and the beginning of the 19th century.
