Ghetto

Behind Piazza Unità lies the ghetto. Leaving from Piazza della Borsa, historically the economic heart of Trieste, across Via Portizza, arriving at the web of narrow alleys with characteristic antique shops and second hand book stalls. That’s what remains of the Riborgo ghetto, home to the Jewish population from 1696 on and replacing the old ghetto near Piazza Cavana.

Right in the centre of the quarter there was the small square of Jewish schools and the district of Jewish schools.

The ghetto had three synagogues, but during the 1930s big part of the area was demolished to make room for present buildings, among which the police headquarters, formerly Nazi headquarters.
