An itinerary to discover Jewish Trieste

3 hours walking tour – price on request

Our itinerary to discover the history and the traditions of the Jewish community in Trieste begins from Piazza Unità d'Italia, the biggest square in Europe facing directly onto the sea, and then passes into the former Jewish ghetto, nowadays rich in antique dealers and bric-a-brac shops. Then on to the "Carlo and Vera Wagner" Museum of the Jewish Community, which has many objects of Jewish ritual art on display, documents and books which testify to the life of the Jews in Trieste and indeed are one of the most important Jewish heritages in Italy. It is possible to visit the new hall dedicated to the memory of the Shoah and the racial laws. The exposition proposes documents, objects and images of the everyday life, which tell us the story of the years of Persecution in Trieste. The visit proceeds down via San Nicolò, where we can still find the Antique Bookshop which used to be run by Umberto Saba, and still has many rare and precious volumes on display. The itinerary passes through Viale XX Settembre, where the author Italo Svevo used to live, and it ends at the Synagogue of Trieste, a magnificent building which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and considered the biggest synagogue in Europe.

Upon request it is possible to continue the tour and visit the Jewish cemetery where there are many tombs of important Jewish families from Trieste; and the Rice Factory of San Sabba, the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy.
The visit to these two sites takes 2 hours more.
