The 19th century is the period of major cultural and civil development for the Jewish population of Trieste who are an important part of the economic life of the town.
Just to mention a few of the important figures regarding the economic growth of Trieste: Giuseppe Lazzaro Morpurgo founder of the Generali Insurance Company, Elio Morpurgo manager and later president of the shipping company Austrian Lloyd, who represented the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste at the opening of the Suez Canal, and the engineer Ettore Geiringer who planned the famous “tram de Opcina”.
In 1867 the Jewish community obtains complete freedom with the proclamation of the constitution by equalizing civil, political and religious rights.
