The Risiera di San Sabba was built in 1913 as a rice processing plant and became sadly famous after September 8, 1943 for being used as a temporary prison camp and then for holding deportees before sending them to Germany and Poland. It was used as deposit for stolen goods but mainly as camp for detention and elimination of hostages, partisans, political prisoners and Jews.
On April 4, 1944 the cremator is lit up. Estimates are that at the Risiera three to five thousand persons were killed.
Much higher, however, is the number of prisoners and Jews picked up at random and waiting at the Risiera to be sent to Nazi concentration camps.
In 1965 the Risiera di San Sabba was declared national monument by decree of the President of the Republic. After its restoration by architect Romano Boico it became Civic Museum Riviera di San Sabba.
